We all make mistakes in our writing: some of us make mistakes because they get easily distracted, others perhaps because English is not their first language, others simply because it happens. No matter why and if you make mistakes when writing, Grammarly can help you and make your writing look better.
Being an avid Grammarly’s user myself, I’ve decided to write a comprehensive review of this tool that calls itself “a writing assistant“. Is Grammarly worth it? How much does it cost? How does Grammarly work?
I only recommend products I use and trust, and Grammarly is one of those: in this Grammarly review, I want to give you an overview of this writing tool and an exclusive link to try it for free!

What is Grammarly?
Grammarly is an easy-to-use app/tool for writers that analyses pieces of texts and suggests spelling, grammar, and style changes according to the tone of voice of the text and the recipient. One of the most useful features of Grammarly is that it does everything in real-time, so while you’re writing it suggests you what to change and why.
Who is Grammarly good for?
Grammarly is virtually useful for everyone, in particular for professionals involved with content, at different stages:
- Content writers
- Marketing managers
- Social media managers
- and the list could go on and on.
On top of this, it’s worth mentioning that Grammarly is a helpful tool for both native English speakers and those who are not, and want to be sure that their content are acceptable.
How does Grammarly work?
Once you’ve created your account for Free, you can decide how to use Grammarly. In fact, Grammarly can be used in different ways:
- Install Grammarly’s free browser extension, and Grammarly will help you write correctly on nearly every site on the web. You will see the green Grammarly logo in the bottom right corner of every text field that is being checked by Grammarly.
- Copy and paste any English text into Grammarly’s Editor or into Grammarly’s desktop app.
- To check your writing directly in Microsoft Office, you may use Grammarly for Microsoft Office on Windows or Grammarly for Microsoft Word on Mac.
In any case, you can always, and you should always, instruct Grammarly on how to check the text choosing your goals.
Goals help you getting tailored writing suggestions, and can be set up before starting to analyze the content. The goals you can set are:
The more precise you are, the better results you will get and the more useful Grammarly will be. You can also decide not to set goals, and in this case, Grammarly will give you generic suggestions to make sure your text reads better and it’s comprehensible.
The Performance indicator shows you how your text scored before and after the changes, and takes into account word count, reading time, vocabulary and readability metrics. Once a week, you also get a report by email to show your progresses in the use of Grammarly and if your language has improved compared to other Grammarly users (or at least, that’s what the tool says!).
How many languages Grammarly support?
Grammarly does work with different variants of English: American, Australian, British, and Canadian. It is not currently available in any other language than English.
Where can I use Grammarly?
Grammarly offers native desktop clients for both Windows and macOS. In addition to this, it offers browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. It can also be used on Android and iOS, and can be installed on the iPad to access the Grammarly Editor directly from your device. It also supports Google Docs with the Chrome Extension active.
How much does Grammarly cost?
You can use Grammarly for free, and it includes spelling, grammar, and punctuation checker. Grammarly Premium is the paid version and it includes way more features that can also be customised based on the writer’s needs.
Grammarly Premium can be paid on a monthly basis or on a yearly basis; exactly like for every subscription-based service, the more you commit to stay, the less you pay.
This is a useful Grammarly’s pricing split into monthly, quarterly, and annual plans: you can clearly see the differences and what’s the best value.
Grammarly’s month-to-month pricing doesn’t really make much sense unless you want to test and try before buying: 12 months of the monthly subscription will cost you $359.40 that is more than half the price of the annual subscription, $139.95.
Paying for Grammarly Premium unlocks advanced features that you don’t get with the free version (among them Grammarly (Premium) integrates a Plagiarism checker, which is particularly useful to make sure you’re not violating any copyright).
Common Questions About Grammarly
These are some of the most common questions about Grammarly that you may have.
1. Is Grammarly accurate?
In my experience, Grammarly does a great job catching the spelling, punctuation, and grammar mistakes.
The best part for me is getting advice on why I made mistakes, and how I can correct them: it looks like every time I make a mistake, I’m learning something new. And that’s an added value that, alone, it is worth the price you pay to get Grammarly.
2. Can Grammarly help learning English?
If you’re not a native English speaker (like me), Grammarly won’t help you learning English but it will help you improve your vocabulary and also learn practical rules that you can then apply to every new piece of content you will write.
One of the best features for me is the suggestion on the alternative words you can use to replace an overused term: reading the same words over and over again will make your text boring, but a simple variation can make it interesting and also way more converting. Grammarly detects the words you’ve used and suggests alternative ones, if available. Sometimes the suggestions are not that accurate, so I really recommend you pay attention to what Grammarly suggests, but overall this is an incredibly useful feature.
3. Can Grammarly detect if I’ve copied my content from somewhere?
Yes, Grammarly can detect plagiarism and help you correct your text. Copyright infringement is a serious issue, and it can come with consequences.
Once you’ve asked Grammarly to analyze your text, the tool will give you suggestions on how to change it based on the % of plagiarism detected. This feature is useful for us writers, but it is also useful to check your contributors’ work and avoid problems due to others.
4. Does the use of Grammarly make me a bad writer?
People can say that using Grammarly is for lazy or bad writers, but the truth is that none of us is infallible and we can also make mistakes. In writing, mistakes are the norm and having an “assistant” that can help you with that it is useful and also needed. For me, Grammarly’s biggest value lies in how it helps me to highlight my most common mistakes and help me avoid them going forward.
5. Does Grammarly substitute a proofreader or a language check?
No, Grammarly is a supplement and cannot be considered as a substitute for a proofreader or a language checker. This applies especially to non-English writers. Grammarly is something you need to use and have, but if you are unsure about your overall knowledge of the language you should also and always avail of the help of a proofreader or someone native.
Here comes the best part: if you are unsure about what you have written and you want a human opinion, once you have checked your document with Grammarly you can send your work to a human proofreader/writer and have it reviewed and corrected in a very short time.
6. Is Grammarly easy to use?
Grammarly is one of the easiest tools ever: whether you use it directly in your online documents or you use the desktop app to check your writings, the tool is so intuitive that as soon as you start using it, you will never go back.
It really takes me a few minutes to check my articles, social media posts, documents and it is now part of my writing routine.
7. How to cancel a Grammarly subscription?
If you’ve tried Grammarly and you want to cancel your subscription, you can easily and quickly do it by following these steps:
- Log in to your Premium account
- Go to the Account tab
- Select the Subscription tab
- Click the Cancel Subscription link at the bottom of the page
- Click Yes
- Choose a reason for cancellation
- Click Cancel Subscription
Your subscription to Grammarly will be cancelled and it can be reactivated without costs anytime you want.
8. How many devices can I use Grammarly on?
Premium membership allows access to Grammarly on up to five different devices. You can then use it on your computer, but also on your iPad and your smartphone.
9. Can I use Grammarly offline?
No, you can’t use Grammarly offline. Grammarly only works with a stable Internet connection, otherwise it won’t be able to analyze your text and provide suggestions.
Grammarly Review: the bottom line
Now that we are at the end of this Grammarly review 2020, it’s time to draw conclusions. Grammarly is definitely one of the tools you should use if you deal with content. It’s easy to use, affordable, and it will help you become a better writer. Remember that this cannot be considered a replacement for a human proofreader, but it can help you as a professional.
